Behavioral and Family Treatment Resources

Thank you for taking the time to complete the SHIELD Psychiatry prescreener. Based on the information provided, the concerns described are most appropriately addressed through a program that specializes in structured, family-based, and behavioral treatment. These concerns are real, important, and treatable. However, the most effective intervention is generally not psychiatric medication management alone, which is the primary service structure of our practice. We are unable to proceed to intake so that your family can connect directly with a program designed to provide the appropriate treatment.

This referral carries no judgment. Behavioral concerns often improve most when treatment actively involves parents or caregivers and, when appropriate, the school and other systems surrounding the young person.

What Kind of Treatment May Help

When contacting a provider, ask whether the clinician offers one of these structured treatments by name. Availability and age eligibility vary by program, and the receiving clinician should determine the best fit after completing an assessment.

Request Behavioral Support Through the School

Submit a written request to your child’s public school asking for an evaluation of the behavior’s function and its effect on learning. Specifically ask whether the school should conduct a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and develop or revise a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). Ask to meet with the school psychologist, behavior specialist, counselor, exceptional student education team, or other appropriate school personnel. School-based evaluation and supports may be available without cost to the family, depending on the child’s needs and eligibility.
